ON THE RECORD BRIEFING WAS GIVEN BY DR. BRUCE S. MACCABEE, NAVY PHYSICIST AND CHAIRMAN OF THE FUND FOR U.F.O. RESEARCH, MR. LAWRENCE KOSS, MR. JAMIE SHANDERA AND MR. BUDD HOPKINS, AUTHOR OF MISSING TIME AND INTRUDERS ON THE TOPIC, "THE 40 YEAR HISTORY OF UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS FROM A WORLDWIDE PERSPECTIVE." GROUP HAD SEVERAL SIGHTINGS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE COUNTRIES. INTEREST IN UFO OBJECTS APPEARED OF GREAT INTEREST TO THE LARGE GATHERING OF CORRESPONDENTS.
The approximately 180,000 black and white negatives in this series correspond to prints in Record Group 342, Series FH ("Black and White and Color Photographs of U.S. Air Force and Predecessor Agencies Activities, Facilities and Personnel - World War II and Korean War") and Series B ("Black and White and Color Photographs of U.S. Air Force Activities, Facilities and Personnel, Domestic and Foreign"). Negatives in this series appear in two groups- some 154,000 housed in large (8 1/2"x11" or 9"x11") jackets, and some 26,000 housed in small (4 1/2"x5 1/2") jackets. The jacket size does not necessarily indicate negative size, since a majority of the negatives in the large jackets are in fact 4"x5" or smaller. A single numerical sequence spans both groups (large-jacket negatives are numbered 1 through 183007 with numerous gaps, and small-jacket negatives are numbered 155001 through 183087 with numerous gaps), with some cross-referencing for the "overlap" numbers. For those negatives numbered between 155001 and 183081 that appear in the large-jacket group, an empty jacket appears in the small-jacket group with the notation, "Original Filed in Oversize File." There are no similar cross-reference markers, however, in the large jacket group. Most of the first 5,000 items in the large-jacket group bear the agency designation "AC" (for "Air Corps," used principally on 1930's-1940's negatives but continued, for unknown reasons, into the era of the modern U.S. Air Force). Interspersed in the file are items taken earlier and bearing the "AS" (Air Service) suffix. The rest of the large jacket entries and the entirety of the small-jacket entries bear the updated "USAF" designation. Entries in both groups are, on the whole, negatives -- the original negative submitted by an Air Force photographer, an Air Force, generated copy negative, or, in some cases, both -- although there are also widely-scattered black and white transparencies and 35mm slides. Accompanying a minority of the
In December 1947, after the alleged sightings of flying saucers near Mt. Rainer, Washington, the Air Force, whose responsibilities include the air defense of the country, established Project Sign. Documentation for the project was created and acquired by the Aerial Phenomena Branch, Foreign Technology Division (FTD), Air Force Command (AFSC) until December 1969 when the UFO function was canceled by the Secretary of the Air Force. From 1951 through 1961, FTD was designated the Aerospace Technical Intelligence Center under Assistant Chief of Staff Intelligence (ASC/l), HQ USAF. Prior to that it was the Intelligence Department of Air Material Command. The purpose of Project Sign was to determine whether UFO's were a threat to the national security. In 1948 the project name was changed to Project Grudge and in 1952 the code name was again changed to Project Blue Book and the formal title to Aerial Phenomenon Group. The sightings were recorded by individuals (whose names were not released), by groups, and by the military. Film records of the alleged sightings were made in- Tulsa, Oklahoma; Australia; Fairchild AFB, Washington; Binghamton, NY; Naha, Okinawa; Snohomish, Washington; Almogordo, New Mexico; Montville, Ohio; Sandusky, Ohio; Olmsted AFB, PA; Keesler AFB, MS; Coburn, VA; and Edwards AFB, CA. There are 9 rolls of film of timed radar responses in the following locations- Wichita, Kansas; Macao, China; Edwards AFB, CA; Bermuda; Duluth, Minnesota; Queen Charlotte Islands, CANADA. There is a reference set of these records, consisting of contact sheets or positive rolled film.
This series consists of copies of Government, Government-provided, or Government-funded records relating to unidentified anomalous phenomena, technologies of unknown origin, and non-human intelligence (or equivalent subjects by any other name with the specific and sole exclusion of temporarily non-attributed objects).
